It's no secret that it's tough going to get a job these days, particularly if you're young. No longer is it enough to have a degree, and so one is constantly on the look out for that 'edge' over competitors. Qi grads, seeks to help young people at this critical juncture in their lives.
On Tuesday 27 August, Golden Key in conjunction with Qi Grads, held a free workshop called "Navigating Your A to B" at the Victoria University Flinders Lane campus. Attended by undergraduate students from around Victoria, the workshop centered on the importance of four pillars necessary to obtain a job and which must be reflected in the resume and a job interview. These are: Initiative; Passion; Commitment and Vocational Skills.
To exhibit these in ones resume, the resume must must center on ones educational background (what degree, major etc) experiences one has, and the skills one has learned from their education and experiences. It's important to present it this way, to show how ones education and experiences prove that you have the skills you claim to have. This makes for a more convincing resume. Also, these skills must be aligned to the values of the organisation one is applying to (so take a long look at the organisations website) to show how you are just what they are looking for. For instance, if one has experience working at a fast food shop, one would present this in terms of time management skills (balancing work and study), communication skills (dealing with people) team player and interpersonal skills (can work well with others).
If given the opportunity for a job interview, you will most likely get asked some variation of 'tell us about yourself', to which one must respond in such a way that makes you appear the perfect fit for the job vacancy. To do this answer what you have done and where you've been (education and experience) and where you hope to go, that is, the organisation you are applying to. Don't waste time telling them trivial facts about you, show right from the beginning how you can benefit them.
The workshop went for more than an hour, with many staying back to ask questions.
