The 2013 New Member Reception (NMR) was another well attended and successful night for Golden Key at Victoria University, held on the 11th floor of VU's Flinders Campus, on the evening of October 18.
The induction ceremony, saw each new member presented with a certificate by Director of Student Engagement, Colin Macdonald, who welcomed students on behalf of the university. In his address, he spoke about the importance of the occasion and the privilege that each had in being part of Golden Key.
The evening also saw an address by former Chapter President, Samuel Pearson. He spoke about the importance of going "beyond our books and lectures and engaging in the world" as "it’s no longer enough to simply have a degree, to embark on ones dream career". This he said was "one of the defining marks of true leadership".
"Although resumes are for others, they are about us, and as such tell a story about ourselves. Life experiences and those expereinces one can gain with Golden Key (which no doubt will be listed on our resumes), should not be limited to telling a story about what we want to do, but rather who we aspire to be. That is the story that allows us to pick ourselves up when we fall down in the race of life and keep going. That is what defines leaders."
The evening's keynote address, was delivered by J.J Richardson; a Golden Key member, who is currently undertaking a PhD in Bio-molecular Engineering in nanotechnology at the University of Melbourne. He addressed one of the pillars Golden Key is built on, namely service, and his experiences. He spoke of the amount of poverty in the world, and how educated members like those being inducted into Golden Key, were well placed to address these serious problems. He extolled the using of ones talents to make the world a better place, referencing his own talents in break-dancing, and how workshops teaching poor youth such skills improved their lives.
The evening concluded with excited chatter over drinks and nibbles.
